Caring for Your Tooth After a Root Canal

Temporary Filling

A temporary filling protects your tooth until your final restoration is completed. If the filling comes out completely, call our office so we can replace it.

Wait Until the Numbness Wears Off

If you received local anesthetic, avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off. This usually takes approximately 1–3 hours.

Mild Soreness and Bite Sensitivity

Mild soreness or sensitivity when biting or chewing is normal for several days following root canal treatment.

You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Motrin®, Advil®, or Tylenol® if needed. Follow the directions on the product label unless your physician has advised you otherwise.

You may also rinse gently three times daily with warm salt water: 1 teaspoon of salt mixed with 1 cup of warm water.

Antibiotics

If antibiotics were prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless your treating clinician advises otherwise.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid sticky or hard foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth until your final crown or restoration has been placed.

Brushing and Flossing

Continue gentle brushing and flossing as usual. Take care around the treated tooth and temporary filling.

Your Final Crown Is an Important Step

A crown—or, when needed, a post and core followed by a crown—is often the final step in protecting a root canal-treated tooth. The restoration strengthens the tooth, restores normal function, and helps reduce the risk of fracture.

When to Contact Our Office

Please get in touch with us if:

  • Your temporary filling comes out completely.
  • Your discomfort is becoming worse instead of gradually improving.
  • You develop significant swelling or have concerns about your healing.
  • You have any questions about your instructions or medications.
